In this talk I'll share my experience over the last few years, since I decided to set up my own vegetable garden and start growing produce for my family.
I'll walk you through the challenges I faced: no water source available for irrigation, and the need to make the garden as self-sufficient as possible (scheduled irrigation, weed control, keeping manual work to a minimum).
There's still some "nerdy" stuff left to do: monitoring the pump, the water level and the power supply, so I get alerted when something goes wrong instead of finding out once the plants have already dried out :)
I'll tell you about the mistakes and wrong choices I made out of sheer inexperience as a grower, but also about the satisfaction of harvesting what you've sown.
This is the same talk I'm presenting at ESC (End Summer Camp), enriched here with ideas and discussions that came out of ESC.
I'm Giovanni Mellini, aka merlos, one of the founders of the non-profit association Cyber Saiyan that organizes RomHack Camp.
I occasionally speak on public community events, schools and universities.
